What’s the point of strategic litigation

Human rights work can both be very satisfying and very frustrating. Over the long term human rights promotion is an incredible success story. From the first treaty – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 – to the hundreds of subsequent treaties, resolutions, opinions and judgments at national, regional and international levels that now exist are testament to this success. Millions of pounds each year are paid to local and international NGOs and charities to fund human rights work around the world and thousands of people are employed to advocate for - and uphold - human rights.

teaching Human Rights Litigation in New Zealand

Last week I was given the privilege of teaching “Human Rights Litigation” to lawyers in New Zealand. The Faculty of Law at Auckland University in New Zealand asked me to help to run and teach a five day intensive seminar as part of their Master of Laws (LLM) postgraduate programme. This degree “is designed to provide an advanced level of study for both full time students and those that are legal practitioners… [and] offers law graduates an opportunity to study areas in greater depth and complexity…”
